Reading Practice

Today was a very good day for me. I had been looking for a new job for quite a while. I listed my name at a few employment agencies and was given information about several positions, but I wasn’t interested in any of these jobs.

Last week I filled out an application form for a new company in town and arranged for a personal interview. Several men were interviewed for this job, and I didn’t know if I would get it.

This morning someone from the company called up and asked to see me at two o’clock. When I came into his office, he told me that I was hired. I’ll begin working on Monday. I know I’ll like this job. I’ll be paid very well and my work will be extremely interesting.

I was feeling so happy, I decided to cancel all my appointments for the rest of the day, and I went right home to tell my wife the good news. But before I could say anything to her, she told me what a bad day she was having.

None of the lights in the house were working. She had telephoned many electricians, but they all said they were too busy. Finally one agreed to come and she had been waiting for him almost all day.

When I was able to get her to stop talking about her troubles and listen to me. I told her about the new job and we made plans to go out for dinner and then go to the movies and perhaps go somewhere else after that.

We made up our minds to forget about the electrician and decided to celebrate until dawn. Then we wouldn’t need any lights, anyway.

Conversation

Making Appointments

Dialog 1

NURSE: (answering telephone) Good morning, Dr. Anderson’s office. May I help you? MR. BATES: I’d like to make an appointment to have the dentist look at my teeth. NURSE: Let’s see. I can arrange for you to see the doctor two weeks from now. MR. BATES: Can’t I come in tomorrow? NURSE: I’m afraid Dr. Anderson won’t be able to see you then. His appointment book is filled for the next couple of weeks. MR. BATES: Oh, but I don’t have to see him. I’ll just leave my teeth in his office and he can look at them when he has time. They’re false teeth!

Dialog 2

SALLY: I’d like to apply for a secretarial position. MR. ALLEN: Very well. Do you know any shorthand? SALLY: No, but I can write very fast. MR. ALLEN: Can you use a typewriter and other office machines? SALLY: No, but I’d be glad to learn how to use them. MR. ALLEN: Yes, I see. This is a permanent position. Can you work every day from nine to five? SALLY: Oh, no. I’m a student at the university and I have to study most of the time. I can only work part-time. MR. ALLEN: I couldn’t possibly hire you. You can’t take shorthand, you can’t type and you can only work part-time. Why did you apply for a permanent secretarial position? SALLY: Well, I thought you might be able to arrange something special for your daughter, Dad.
