Reading Practice

The geographical location of a country and its physical characteristics are very important to its development and progress. The United States is very fortunate in this respect. La ubicación geográfica de un país y sus características físicas son muy importantes para su desarrollo y progreso. Los Estados Unidos es muy afortunado en este aspecto.

First of all, it has a good climate. In almost all sections of the country it is possible to live comfortably during the whole year. It is true that in the south it sometimes gets very hot, and in the north very cold. But the people who live in these regions become accustomed to the climate and never suffer very much when the weather is either very hot or very cold.

En primer lugar, tiene un buen clima. En casi todos los sectores del país, es posible vivir cómodamente durante todo el año. Es cierto que en el sur, a veces se pone muy caliente, y en el norte, muy frío. Pero la gente que vive en estas regiones se acostumbran al clima y nunca sufren mucho cuando el clima es muy caliente o muy fría.

In a large country there is usually a great variety of different physical characteristics. In the United States, there are wide plains and high mountains, thousands of lakes and rivers of all sizes, cool forests and hot deserts, and a coastline several thousand miles long. En un país tan grande por lo general hay una gran variedad de diferentes características físicas. En los Estados Unidos, hay extensas llanuras y altas montañas, miles de lagos y ríos de todos los tamaños, los bosques fríos y calientes, postres y una costa de varios miles de kilómetros de largo.

The many lakes and rivers, as well as the long coastline, have been of great importance to the development of the country, since they made possible the easy transportation of people and all the things people need. Transportation by water is still necessary and important. In modern times, however, trains, automobiles, trucks and airplanes are doing much of the work which was formerly done by ships and boats. Los numerosos lagos y ríos, así como la larga línea costera, han sido de gran importancia para el desarrollo del país, ya que hicieron posible el fácil transporte de personas y todas las cosas que la gente necesita.
